Professor Bryony James is Provost at Te Herenga Waka | Victoria University of Wellington

Te Herenga Waka | Victoria University of Wellington has appointed Professor Bryony James to the position of Provost, to provide strategic leadership to the Deans and to all academic activities.

Most recently Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research) at the University of Waikato, Bryony has shaped and delivered Waikato’s research strategy, across a portfolio comprising research and enterprise; WaikatoLink Ltd (technology transfer); and the School of Graduate Research.  She has created new positions to support sustainability and to promote engagement between research and external stakeholders, in addition to creating an early career academic network and, with other wāhine toa, launching a Women in Leadership programme.  Bryony has also led projects to encourage greater engagement between academic staff and Te Ao Māori and has supported the creation of PhD scholarships for Māori, Pasifika and industry partnerships.

Bryony was previously employed by the University of Auckland, progressing her career culminating in the Deputy Dean (Research) position in the Faculty of Engineering.  Bryony’s own research is rooted in traditional materials science approaches and her current research focuses on the cross-section of materials, food and nutrition.  She is a Fellow of Engineering NZ and a Member of the Royal Society of New Zealand Te Apārangi.
