  • Lead an outstanding artistic vision and plan for a premium theatre
  • Newly created executive position fitting for the next era
  • Connect and create communities, wow audiences and enrich lives

With the Auckland Theatre Company’s thirty-year anniversary approaching, a Strategic Visioning Project was recently commissioned to underpin the continued evolution of the Company. Following the stepping down of the Artistic Director and this Project, the Board is seeking to appoint an exceptional candidate to the newly created position of Artistic Director/Chief Executive (AD/CE). The next AD/CE will strategically lead the artistic and commercial functions of the Company through its next phase of development which will reflect Tāmaki Makaurau’s diversity, community and place in New Zealand.
Based in Auckland, reporting to the Board and with a team of four Associate Directors, the AD/CE will foster a cohesive, collaborative, and communicative team, working together to ensure a culture of inclusivity, trust and high-performance and a shared commitment across the entire organisation to develop and deliver an outstanding artistic vision and plan. The successful candidate will have significant scope in deciding how to implement the Company’s vision.
Bold, creative and visionary in thinking, the ideal candidate will bring experience in leading the artistic endeavours of a relevant performing arts sector organisation, combined with a strong arts administration and management skill.
Demonstrating strong professional and personal credibility, the next AD/CE will bring excellent interpersonal, advocacy and influencing skills, able to build strong relationships internally and externally with government, funders, donors and in the broader community. The ability to demonstrate an understanding of the importance of te reo and tikanga Māori and the principles of the Treaty of Waitangi will be essential.
Auckland Theatre Company is Auckland’s premier professional theatre company with a national and international reputation.  It has offices and studio spaces in Balmoral and has its theatre at the ASB Waterfront Theatre.  It is active in education and community activities and receives significant funding from local government and Creative New Zealand. The driving purpose of the Company is “powerful storytelling and shared creative experiences that connect and create communities, wow audiences and enrich lives”.
