The Position

The Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (RACS) seeks to appoint an exceptionally talented leader to become its new Chief Executive Officer to drive the strategy of this prestigious Medical College. The successful candidate will uphold the College’s record and reputation of being the lead advocate for surgical standards, professionalism and surgical education in Australia and Aotearoa New Zealand.

Reporting to the President and RACS Council, the CEO will lead, manage and build the organisation’s capacity to advocate on behalf of the profession and deliver programs and services that enhance the profession’s standards of excellence. The CEO will oversee the day to day management of the College and will be accountable for driving and delivering key strategic priorities as agreed with Council. This will require a visionary leader who can translate strategy into practice and who is comfortable proposing and implementing continuous improvement initiatives.

Presenting with exemplary interpersonal and stakeholder management skills, the successful candidate will be a highly experienced leader who has the proven ability to advocate diplomatically, build effective partnerships and foster a collaborative culture within a complex organisation. The appointee will understand membership-based organisations and will demonstrate strong prior experience within health, education or peak bodies. The incoming CEO will combine a positive and collaborative leadership approach with the ability to develop and implement a vision for the future. A developed understanding of corporate governance is essential along with exceptional business acumen, an innovative outlook and a commitment to accountability and transparency. Demonstrated skills and experience in managing organisations through change are essential, along with strong financial management skills and the ability to deliver on strategy while managing risk, governance and corporate compliance.

This position will be located in Melbourne.

RACS is the focal point for leadership in the surgical profession in Australia and Aotearoa New Zealand. It is the leading advocate for surgical standards, professionalism and surgical education. Established in 1927, this well established and prestigious non-profit organisation represents more than 7000 surgeons and 1300 surgical trainees and International Medical Graduates.

RACS supports healthcare and surgical education in the Asia-Pacific region and is a substantial funder of surgical research. Fellows of the College have successfully completed rigorous surgical training and maintain a commitment to lifelong learning and high standards of professionalism.
