The Position

The CEO leads the strategic direction of the organisation and regulates to achieve a highly qualified, proficient and reputable teaching profession for the benefit of all Victorian children and young people. The CEO is the public face of the Institute, operating as a key ambassador and enabling the quality teaching that occurs in Victoria.

The position is responsible for the effective leadership and management of the organisation (with approximately 115 dedicated staff), exercising significant decision-making powers under delegation from the VIT Council or in accordance with requirements of the Education, Training and Reform Act 2006. The VIT investigates individual cases and regulates compliance with the Codes of Conduct and Ethics.

The CEO provides leadership oversight for:

  • the provision of secretariat support, governance advice and legal advice for Council
  • policy and strategic planning
  • financial and other business systems
  • stakeholder engagement & communications
  • people & culture
  • regulatory branches for registration, professional conduct and accreditation/professional practice.


We are seeking a leader with exceptional interpersonal and communication skills along with relevant experience working in a regulatory environment. The preferred candidate will demonstrate an in-depth understanding of the structural, corporate governance and other challenges faced by regulatory bodies. Experience and/or an awareness of current issues in Education is expected.

Success in the role requires an accomplished and adaptable executive leader who engages constructively with a range of stakeholders, including co-regulators.  The CEO will bring a strong moral compass to their values-based decision making, representing the VIT publicly to build trust in the community and drive a positive culture of continuous improvement.

The CEO is employed under a 5 year executive contract in accordance with the Victorian Government’s Public Entity Executive Remuneration (PEER) Policy.


The Organisation

The Victorian Institute of Teaching (VIT) is an independent statutory authority for the teaching profession in Victoria.  Its primary function is to regulate members of the teaching profession to ensure quality teaching and provide for the safety and wellbeing of children.

The VIT accredits initial teacher education (ITE) programs that prepare early career teachers for working in Victoria, register school and early childhood teachers, monitor the suitability of all registered teachers, support beginner teachers to enter the profession and develop their practice through professional standards. The VIT also investigates instances of misconduct, incompetence or lack of fitness to teach and regulates compliance with the Codes of Conduct and Ethics.

The VIT is governed by a 14-member Council that is informed by a number of committees. Advice from the VIT Council and committees informs the work undertaken by the Chief Executive Officer and VIT’s six branches.
