  • Strategically lead agile performing arts organisation
  • Enthusiastic champion for chamber music
  • Based in Wellington, New Zealand

The Board of the Chamber Music New Zealand Trust is calling for applications for the position of Chief Executive of Chamber Music New Zealand (CMNZ) following the retirement of Dr Peter Walls from that position early in 2019.
Based in Wellington, CMNZ currently employs twelve people, with three direct reports to the Chief Executive (Artistic Manager; Marketing and Development Manager; and Business Administrator).  In turn, the Chief Executive is accountable to the Trust Board and has overall responsibility for the integrity of financial and performance-based reporting to the Board; for guiding and implementing agreed strategic plans; and for CMNZ’s financial sustainability.
Candidates will be expected to have strong empathy with the value of a vibrant music sector in New Zealand; to be alert to current opportunities and challenges facing that sector; and, as Chief Executive, to play a leadership role in exploring how CMNZ responds to them.
Specifically, candidates will be enthusiastic champions for “chamber music” in New Zealand; for building on the artistic achievements represented by the CMNZ brand; and for providing diverse and growing opportunities for audiences, performers and students to explore “music up close”.
Applicants for this prestigious position are invited to demonstrate relevant experience in management; strategic development; organisational and team leadership; and financial capability.
Candidates will require effective communication skills and be expected to play an active role in building relationships with CMNZ’s external funding partners/sponsors/donors, including Creative New Zealand as CMNZ’s principal funder.
Applicants will also need to be comfortable in engaging with artists, other arts agencies and audiences.
The proposed term of the appointment is five years, with contractual provisions relating to renewal.
