  • Executive leadership opportunity at new statutory authority
  • Lead efficient and holistic operations
  • Drive innovation in strategy, planning and reporting

The Position
The Chief Operating Officer (COO) leads and oversees the Academy’s operational accountabilities, including aligning strategy, budget, business planning and reporting with the government’s overall policy and delivery priorities.

Reporting to, and working closely with, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO), the COO is a key senior leadership position with an important role in both strategic and operational decision making.  The COO will ensure the integration and effective leadership of the Academy’s functions and state-wide service delivery, maintaining the confidence of relevant professional bodies, associations and unions in the educational sector.  The role will also provide advice and reporting to Government and the Board on the delivery of evidence-based, specialised cross sectoral professional development for teachers and educational leaders, as well as matters related to the Academy’s statutory responsibilities and operations.

With a strategic mindset, the ideal candidate will bring experience and expertise in operational leadership at an executive level, with the ability to work collaboratively and deal with complexity, providing an holistic service to the organisation.  A leader with a track record in motivating and supporting high performing teams, you will be able to communicate the Academy’s vision, fostering relationships with a range of stakeholders, both internally and externally.  Proven experience in the development and management of financial operations in a complex and changing environment will be important, with the ability to lead the allocation of resources over the longer term.

Although sector experience is not a direct requirement, the ideal candidate will be motivated to drive change and improvements in school leadership and teaching, which will ultimately result in delivering outcomes for all Victorian children and their communities.  The COO will demonstrate a passion for the vision of the Academy and an alignment with the Victorian public sector values of responsiveness, integrity, impartiality, accountability, respect, leadership and human rights.

The Organisation
The Victorian Academy of Teaching and Leadership, designed in response to Victoria’s unique system context, is a distinct specialist entity dedicated to developing teaching and school leadership excellence and raising the calibre and status of the entire Victorian teaching profession through the provision of specialised professional learning.
Building on the strong foundations of the Bastow Institute of Educational Leadership and with a new focus on professional learning for Victoria’s highly skilled teachers, the Academy’s operations have commenced delivery of new programs, including the flagship Teaching Excellence Program.
