The ACT Health Directorate seeks to appoint the Chief Psychiatrist as part of refreshed clinical leadership team in The Office of Professional Leadership (OPLE). The Chief Psychiatrist is a statutory role under the Mental Health Act 2015 (the Act) and has accountability to the Minister for Mental Health. This is a critical position to safeguard the rights of individuals, improve service delivery, administer the functions under the Act and monitor standards and services within the ACT. With key leadership, and legislative responsibilities, the Chief Psychiatrist has a unique role in the ACT’s public mental health system in promoting continual service improvement and clinical best practice to fulfil the values and principles of the Act.
Reporting into the Deputy Director – General, Policy and Transformation and leading an office of five staff, The Chief Psychiatrist will carry out critical functions for the operations of the Act.. They will also play a critical role in monitoring public and private psychiatric facilities. The Chief Psychiatrist will build a presence around Mental Health and Wellbeing and support policy related work.
Success in the position will be achieved by an appointee who is a contemporary leader who demonstrates initiative and a drive for best practice. With an understanding of relevant public health legislation, The Chief Psychiatrist will be a strategic thinker with whole system leadership skills. They will have the ability to build
and maintain collaborative relationships with multiple internal and external stakeholders. Presenting with a relational style, the appointee will have the capability to function on the national stage with their OPLE peers, for the overall improvement of health services in ACT. Fellowship with the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatry is a requirement of this position and that they are Ahpra registered. .
