The Position
As part of the senior leadership group, the Corporate Counsel provides authoritative expert advice and oversight on a range of matters of legal and governance significance covering areas of legislative compliance, dispute settlement and litigation, prosecution, claims, contracts and tenders, risk management, freedom of information and privacy.
Reporting to the Director Corporate Services, the Corporate Counsel currently has four direct reports and is primarily responsible for leading, coaching and inspiring the team to develop, implement and support the organisation’s legal and governance obligations. The Corporate Counsel team protects the interests of both Council and the community, with regular external engagement including with government departments, regulators, auditors and integrity agencies. The Corporate Counsel will have a proven reputation as a trusted adviser and instil a proactive business partnership approach for their service.
To be successful in the role you will be an integrity driven leader with expertise in legal and governance practice, including drafting contracts, providing targeted organisational advice, and negotiating outcomes in dispute resolution and claims management. Excellent interpersonal and written communication skills, with the ability to communicate messages to various audiences, produce high quality reports and represent Council professionally in forums are essential attributes. Fostering a climate of collaboration, innovative thinking, new ideas and best practice will ensure the team continues its pursuit of excellence and continuous improvement.
