The Organisation

The Victorian Institute of Forensic Medicine (VIFM) is a statutory agency within the Justice and Community Safety portfolio of the Victorian Government and is governed by the VIFM Council on behalf of the Attorney-General. For over 30 years, the VIFM has provided independent, high-quality forensic medical and scientific services to support the health of the community and the justice system in Victoria and beyond. The VIFM is a trusted global leader in forensic medicine.

The Institute’s work can be described as a virtuous circle of teaching, training and research, underpinned with its formal links to Monash University’s Department of Forensic Medicine. Academic activities including research and teaching are core features of the Institute’s medical and scientific work and contribute significantly to high-quality service delivery. The coronial and justice systems depend upon the robustness and reliability of the Institute’s forensic evidence and service provision.

The VIFM’s contributions to public health and justice include our work in coronial jurisdictions and our input into policy development for areas of public health, such as policing priorities including drug and alcohol campaigns, cold case breakthroughs, among many more.
