The Position
The Australian Institute for Teaching & School Leadership (AITSL) seeks to appoint a Director – Initial Teacher Education (ITE) to lead a range of projects that focus on improving the quality of ITE nationally. Managing a team of up to 10, the Director – ITE is responsible for planning, directing and overseeing projects, teams and budgets to successfully deliver the annual ITE work plan for AITSL.
As a member of the AITSL Leadership Team, and reporting to the General Manager, Teaching and School Leadership, the Director – ITE is expected to be a key contributor to the development of the culture and strategic direction of AITSL. The Director – ITE will provide policy advice on ITE issues and will initiate, influence and manage relationships with a variety of stakeholders including teacher education institutions and regulators.
The ideal candidate will have a track record of leading and managing multiple complex projects and advising on issues within a political environment. S/he will also possess the demonstrated ability to initiate and diplomatically influence and manage relationships with a variety of stakeholders with competing points of view. A demonstrated understanding of key issues related to teaching, initial teacher education and education policy, or the ability to quickly develop this in the role, will be critical as will be highly developed analytical skills, a capacity to interpret, develop and provide robust advice and practical solutions. The new Director – ITE will be a respected and respectful leader who possesses the demonstrated ability to effectively manage a team, work with staff across AITSL and take accountability for their performance. A relevant tertiary education qualification is required.
The Organisation
AITSL is a public company based in Melbourne. It is funded by the Australian Government. The Commonwealth Minister for Education & Training is the sole member of the Company.
As a national body, AITSL was established to promote excellence so that teachers and school leaders could have the maximum impact on student learning in all Australian schools. AITSL works in partnership with governments, education leaders, teacher education providers, systems, sectors and the profession across all jurisdictions to provide support to advance quality teaching and effective school leadership in Australia. Everything AITSL does is backed by evidence and research.
AITSL operates under its own constitution and is governed by an independent Board of Directors who bring diverse professional experiences and expertise in educational practice, research and provision to the work of the Institute.
AITSL’s current funding arrangement expires on 30 June 2022, and employment with AITSL will end on that date, unless an extension is negotiated on the agreement of the Board and the appointee.
