The Position

Due to the impending retirement of the incumbent, Wesley College seeks to appoint a high calibre people and culture professional to the position of Director of People and Culture.  The position will play a vital role in supporting the College manage future challenges, while ensuring people and culture strategies align with the College’s vision and values. With a team of nine, the incoming Director will fulfil a pivotal role in cultivating a strong and positive workplace culture, ensuring the well-being and engagement of a workforce of approximately 800 permanent employees and 500 casual staff.

Reporting directly to the Principal, and a member of the College Executive, the Director of People and Culture is responsible for the development, coordination and administration of people and culture related strategies, programs, activities, policies and procedures. The position has oversight of the Health & Safety function and contributes significantly to learning and development programs across the College. With a variety of challenges facing the workforce in the education sector, the Director of People and Culture will have a strong remit to explore opportunities for enhancing the school’s employee value proposition.

The successful appointee will be a People and Culture expert with substantial presence and influence at the executive level, who excels in strategic planning and is able to effectively engage in hands-on tasks when necessary. Outstanding stakeholder management and engagement skills will be essential to build a successful working relationship with the Principal, while also considering and supporting the diverse needs of stakeholders across the College community.  The appointee will have a considered and measured style, complemented by strong communication skills, a high degree of emotional intelligence and a flexible attitude. The ability to generate innovative ideas and execute well thought out and disciplined plans will be essential. Prior experience in managing compliance and dealing with Unions is vital, in addition to sound knowledge of relevant industrial / employment instruments and laws.  Knowledge and understanding of an educational environment is highly desirable, however the College is open to strong transferrable skills from other sectors.
