  • Newly created position
  • Strategic leadership role
  • Drive optimal relevance and viability of humanitarian programs

The Position
The Australian Red Cross is a large, complex organisation that is actively reimagining itself in a fast-evolving world. As it contemplates how it will deliver on its mission to build a better society in the future, it has created the position of Director of Programs and now seeks to appoint an outstanding individual to oversee the development, implementation and evolution of all programs and services, to ensure long term relevance and viability. The Program division of Australian Red Cross is outcome focused and aligned to the organisation’s strategic priority of ‘Impact’. Accordingly, the Director of Programs position is responsible for ensuring desired humanitarian impact is achieved.
Reporting to the CEO and working closely with the Director of State & Territory Operations and other Executives, the Director of Programs will be responsible for translating the organisation’s strategy into Programs and Services that are specific, measurable, action oriented, results driven and time bound and that reflect external trends, social issue development and environmental changes. The Director will also identify opportunities for co-development with partners and lead the development of impact reporting to track progress against agreed targets and provide stakeholders with informed, fact based reporting. Other key elements of the role include ensuring all Programs and Services meet expected contractual and compliance obligations and that the organisation has appropriate policies, frameworks and procedures in place to safeguard vulnerable people who encounter Red Cross through these Programs and Services.
The ideal candidate will be a contemporary leader who has extensive experience in humanitarian program design and evaluation techniques and who has a record of driving strong performance driven, results focused and agile cultures in complex organisations. Equipped with outstanding communication and partnering skills, the appointee will also be skilled in organisational development, personnel management, financial planning and analysis, budget and resource development, and strategic planning. An understanding of business planning and regulatory frameworks relevant to the not-for-profit sector is essential as is an affinity for the Fundamental Principles, Ethical Framework and values of the organisation.
The position can be based in most major Australian cities.
The Organisation
The Australian Red Cross is part of the world’s largest humanitarian organisation. As a body independent of government; and with no political, religious or cultural affiliation, the organisation strives to improve peoples’ lives and build their resilience no matter who they are or where they live.
All Red Cross work is guided by the seven Fundamental Principles of the Red Cross Red Crescent movement: Humanity, Impartiality, Neutrality, Independence, Voluntary Service, Unity and Universality.
