The Position

This is a unique opportunity that combines strategy, governance, risk and compliance to add value across VAGO towards better outcomes.

As the Director, Strategic Governance and Risk, you will directly lead a small autonomous team, sponsor risk and governance improvement initiatives, and support the Auditor-General through whole of organisation oversight using influential leadership.

Your ability to combine systems thinking and build stakeholder buy-in will be critical to your success. Your personal agility, commitment to service excellence and subject matter expertise that delivers pragmatic results will also contribute. VAGO operates in a digitally-enabled environment which supports our flexible working arrangements, so your ability to leverage these capabilities will be important.

Skills & Experience

  • Values driven direct and influential leadership
  • Proven track record in strategic governance, risk management and strategy
  • Strong understanding of risk and governance frameworks, and how to embed them to improve enterprise outcomes
  • Strong facilitation, communication, and interpersonal skills
  • Experience on senior management teams and engaging with audit and risk committees


Tertiary qualifications in a field such as governance, project management, business, commerce, accounting, social sciences, public policy or similar are required, however, prior public sector external audit is not necessary.

The Auditor-General provides assurance to Parliament on the accountability and performance of the Victorian public sector.

VAGO conducts over 550 financial and performance audits annually across portfolios including infrastructure, transport, health and social services, education, water, local government, insurance, justice, treasury and superannuation.
