The Position

James Cook University (JCU) is Australia’s most successful university in producing graduates who go on to rural and regional careers.  JCU’s College of Medicine and Dentistry offers world-class training in medicine, dentistry and pharmacy and is home to internationally renowned research.  The College offers an exciting opportunity to contribute its leadership, vision, management and performance as the Dean and Head of Medicine.  Based at the Bebegu Yumba (Townsville) campus, JCU Medicine is a leader in socially accountable medicine, equipping students for highly rewarding careers with adventure, skills and impact.

Reporting to the Dean of the College, this important role contributes to the leadership, management and performance of the College and University more broadly.  In addition to providing academic leadership and management of learning, teaching, research, research education and engagement, the role is also responsible for the Bachelor of Medicine Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) program.  The Dean and Head of Medicine also drives external engagement with the medical profession, the Australian Medical Council, the healthcare industry and broad networks of medical schools nationally and internationally.

With postgraduate qualifications and significant experience in the delivery of clinical education and training, the ideal candidate will bring a track record in academic leadership and will demonstrate significant professional impact in one or more priority themes for Medicine at JCU: rural health; tropical health; Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health; global health; and the health of underserved populations.  A collegiate leader with outstanding communication and influencing skills, the appointee will be able to foster relationships with diverse stakeholder groups, including with government, professional bodies, the broader healthcare sector and the community, representing and advocating for the College and the University.

The successful candidate must hold (or be able to obtain) registration as a medical practitioner in Australia and Fellowship of a relevant Australian specialist College.  The Dean and Head of Medicine will demonstrate personal alignment with the University’s core values of excellence; authenticity; integrity; and respect.
