An inner-city council in Victoria is looking for a new Media Advisor, to drive innovation and creative approaches to advancing the council’s reputation and ability to engage with the diverse community. Reporting to the Senior Coordinator Communications and Engagement, the Media Advisor will be responsible for enhancing and protecting the Council’s public image (internally and externally) through a range of best practice communications and engagement strategies. This is a 6-month contract role with the opportunity to extend.
The position objectives are:

  • Proactively promote a positive image of the Council through all communications including publications, media, digital channels, and all promotional activities.
  • Research, write and edit Council publications and other communications material for the Council.
  • Manage all reputational issues and media relations.
  • Provide high-level strategic advice and support to the Mayor and Councillors, members of the Executive and senior management group, working closely with the Chief Executive Officer, Director, and Manager Advocacy and Engagement.
  • Take a lead role in key cross-organisational projects, identifying communications and engagement opportunities and issues.
  • Apply sound political judgement, creativity, and initiative to ensure communication and engagement activities are effective and appropriate.
  • Foster an open, creative, and high achieving team environment that supports Council’s organisational objectives and values, and Branch service plan.


  • A tertiary qualification in communications, marketing, public relations/journalism, or related discipline or extensive experience in a similar role.
  • Highly developed oral, written, and digital communication skills and exceptional attention to detail.
  • Demonstrated experience designing, delivering, and evaluating effective communications strategies, action plans, and campaigns.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage media relations.
  • Demonstrated experience is managing complex issues in a large organisation and a strong understanding of the legal and political context.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of and ability to implement budgeting principles and practices and accounting / financial procedures.
  • Experience leading and motivating teams and demonstrated ability to collaborate with and effectively manage stakeholders.
  • Excellent time and project management skills and proven ability to work under pressure and to tight deadlines.
  • A tertiary qualification in communications, marketing, journalism, or a related discipline or extensive experience in a similar role.
