The Position

Ballarat Clarendon College is one of the most consistently high performing, non-selective, independent schools in Australia. Its focus on academic excellence is supported by an equal focus on wellbeing to nurture and develop each student to maximise their competence, skills, and capacity, ensuring they are well prepared for their future.

Mr David Shepherd has held the position of Principal since January 1997 and has led the school with distinction. Clarendon is now the largest in terms of enrolments in its history and is in a strong financial position.

Reporting to the Ballarat Clarendon College Board, the incoming Principal will have a strong understanding of the history of Ballarat Clarendon College and alignment with the pedagogical approach which is explicit teaching supported by a knowledge-based curriculum. They will need to have experience in coeducation and have highly developed interpersonal skills to build relationships with all stakeholders across the community.

Potential candidates will be progressive and contemporary in their personal and professional approach to the role, calling on a sound knowledge and effective display of the qualities required of successful educational leaders of today.

The successful candidate will need to demonstrate strong educational leadership to provide a focus on continuous improvement to the learning and teaching programs.  A contemporary and creative outlook combined with high emotional intelligence and a calm and pragmatic demeanour will ensure success in this leadership position.

Ballarat Clarendon College is the fifth oldest private school in Victoria, opening on 6 July 1864 at St Andrew’s Presbyterian church as Ballarat College.

In 1974, Ballarat College and Clarendon Presbyterian Ladies College formally joined to become Ballarat Clarendon College, the school is associated with the Uniting Church in Australia which acts as a strong guide for its values and philosophy.
