Te Herenga Waka – Victoria University of Wellington is currently recruiting a Professor in Māori Designed Environments to join the Wellington School of Architecture. This is an exciting opportunity for a high-level academic to lead this new programme and help shape the future of architecture and the Built Environment in Aotearoa.   This is a new position and the successful candidate will provide leadership of our new Māori Specialisation within the Bachelors of Architectural Studies and Masters of Architecture.  

The position calls for extensive experience in academic leadership with a focus on Mātauranga Māori as it relates to designed environments. You will bring a reputation and profile as an accomplished researcher and/or senior practitioner with the capability to lead the Māori Designed Environments major.

  • Leadership and development of this new programme.
  • On-going research activity.
  • Academically rigorous teaching across undergraduate and postgraduate levels.
  • Actively engage with iwi, hapu, industry, government, professions and diverse communities.

You are passionate about teaching a diverse range of students and appreciate the importance of Ako (reciprocal teaching and learning) to this environment. You will be familiar with contemporary discourse and demands in the field of Architecture, with expertise in Māori Designed environments. A specialisation and evidence of success in one or more of the following in preferred:

  • Urban design
  • Architecture 
  • Interior architecture 
  • Landscape architecture
  • Building science

 

The University is open to applications from a wide range of candidates that may contribute to leadership, research and teaching in this area. 

An appreciation for both the fundamental and advanced requirements of Māori designed environments as part of the discipline of architecture will help you thrive in this role, as well as an appreciation of iwi, hapu and industry connections and opportunities to collaborate and enhance student successes and experiences. You will engage with allied majors, in particular Building Science, Interior Architecture and Landscape Architecture, and be encouraged to share and scaffold knowledge across the other relevant majors in the School of Architecture. A collaborative and open approach to teaching and learning will give you opportunities of growth and diversity. You will also encourage a collaborative and supportive environment. 

Key Requirements:   

  • A completed PhD in a relevant field, or a Masters with extensive practice experience.
  • An established track record in research publication and creative work.
  • Demonstrated evidence of a high standard of teaching in a relevant field at tertiary level.
  • Experience of academic leadership.
  • Ability to work with students and staff from a diverse range of backgrounds.
  • Ability to work with communities, iwi and hapu.
