Build a legacy with the University of the South Pacific
The University of the South Pacific (USP) is the premier dual sector university serving the Pacific region and only one of three regional universities of its kind in the world. USP endeavours to ‘Shape Pacific Futures’ by shaping Pacific minds to overcome the development challenges that we face, through research, innovation and future-proof thinking. Uniquely governed by its twelve member countries, USP is not only a higher education and research institution, but also a regional integration organisation that provides services within the communally agreed structured regional mechanisms geared towards benefiting the lives of the Pacific People.
The opportunity
USP seeks a visionary and transformational leader to steer the University’s research and innovation plans in growing its status as a high-quality and research-intensive university that responds to global, regional and industry needs.
As Deputy Vice-Chancellor Research and Innovation (DVCR&I), you will report directly to the Vice-Chancellor and President and will play a vital role in building USP’s vision and strategies on research and innovation.
You are a proven strategic leader who values the empowering force of education and research in changing the world. You are committed to creating a better society, driven by ethics and embodying human ideals and values with a strong sense of purpose.
You are passionate and recognise the significance of innovation in research and its impact on social and industrial advancements. From climate change, health, social, economic, education to human rights, you appreciate these issues of regional significance and the crucial role of USP in tackling the region’s challenges.
You will be part of the Senior Management Team, providing inspirational leadership in promoting high quality research and innovation in a globally ranked University. As a transformative leader, you will work collaboratively with consistent communication, decision making and transparency. You will inspire your colleagues to bring meaningful change, embrace cultural diversity and build high level and multidisciplinary engagement and research partnerships.
The DVCR&I will be responsible for:

  • Leading institutional efforts in promoting highest quality research and innovation in all schools and campuses and strengthening global, regional and industry research partnerships;
  • Developing and implementing a Research, Innovation and Partnership strategy for USP which identifies research and innovation priorities;
  • Establishing multidisciplinary (engineering, science, technology, business, social sciences and humanities) initiatives that will place USP on the global map for research and thought leadership;
  • Developing and fostering robust and mutually beneficial global, regional and industry partnerships and funding for research and technological innovation growth, including hosting academic collaboration events, conferences and symposia;
  • Overseeing the development of university-wide research centres and other initiatives that will encourage a robust research and innovation culture;
  • Contributing to the leadership and management of the University.
