The Victorian Registration and Qualifications Authority (VRQA) is governed by an independent Board, which reports to the Minister for Education and the Minister for Training and Skills. The Governor in Council seeks to appoint new Board members in 2023 to ensure the efficient and effective operation of the Authority, accountable to Ministers for the discharge of the VRQA’s statutory functions and its regulatory and financial performance.

VRQA Board members play a key role in setting the strategic direction for the operation of the Authority, ensuring operation in accordance with the strategic plan and Ministerial expectations, subject to performance and regulatory objectives established by the Victorian Government. The Board oversees the financial performance of the Authority and monitors the performance of the VRQA CEO.

With experience in the education and/or training sectors, including school education, vocational education and training, adult, community and further education and/or higher education, the ideal candidates will bring skills in quality assurance, business management, institutional governance, law, finance and industry. Bringing significant management experience and governance understanding, prospective Board members will have a values-based approach and an enthusiasm to contribute to the outcomes of the Education State.  Senior expertise in regulation, the vocational education and training sector, information knowledge management, public sector governance and leadership will be highly regarded.  Please see the attached position description for more information.

The Board conducts six Board meetings per year, as well as an annual planning day, annual stakeholder event, and an annual risk workshop. Board members are expected to have capacity to support one or more of the Board’s committees.  Positions on the VRQA Board are remunerated and members may be appointed for terms of up to three years.

The Organisation

The VRQA is an independent statutory authority, working to assure the quality of education and training in Victoria. It ensures that employers of apprentices and trainees, and providers of education and training (including course and qualification owners) meet quality standards, and that information is readily available to support informed choice regarding the education and training choices of Victorians.

As Victoria’s education and training regulator, VRQA contributes to the cross-portfolio efforts of the Department of Education and the Department of Job, Skills, Industry and Regions to help Victorians gain the skills and knowledge they need to thrive and participate in a complex and challenging economy and society.
