Expressions of Interest: Youth Mental Health and Wellbeing VIC Board Members and Board Chair

Youth Mental Health and Wellbeing Victoria (YMHWV) is being established on 1 September 2023 as a new statutory authority in response to reforms recommended by the Royal Commission into Victoria’s Mental Health System.

YMWHV will champion the voices of young Victorians so that they can share their mental health and wellbeing experiences. Its role will be to provide system leadership and strategic advice, and to oversee certain youth mental health and wellbeing services. The Mental Health and Wellbeing Act 2022 sets out the full legislative powers and functions of YMHWV and its Board.

In the first year of its operation, YMHWV will work to set up a service agreement with a Declared Operator who will deliver youth mental health and wellbeing services in the North West region of Melbourne. Orygen has been named as the inaugural Declared Operator.

YMHWV’s Board will have seven to nine Board members, At a minimum, it must include:

  • At least two young people (aged 18 to 25) with lived or living experience of mental illness or psychological distress; and
  • At least one young person (aged 18 to 25) with lived or living experience as a carer for a person with mental illness and psychological distress.

One member of the Victorian Collaborative Centre Board will also sit on the YMHWV Board.

We welcome interest from applicants for Board Chair and Board Member positions.

Who we’re looking for:

We are looking for Board Members from a diverse range of backgrounds. Young people and others with lived and living experience of mental illness or psychological distress are strongly encouraged to apply.

We also encourage applications from women, people of all ages, Aboriginal and / or Torres Strait Islander people, people with disability, people from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds and from lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, gender diverse, intersex and queer (LGBTIQ+) people.

All Board members will:

  • share a commitment to rebuilding a new mental health and wellbeing system for young people
  • approach reform with curiosity and courage to think outside known models of mental health across service delivery, research and training
  • commit to collaboration, listening to different perspectives, sharing power, and sitting with discomfort
  • be open to continual learning and reflection
  • hold respect, humility and compassion
  • commit to human rights, cultural safety and Aboriginal self-determination
