Public Profile CEO Search - Fisher Leadership

Public Profile CEO Search – at National Australian Institution

To advance national commitment to evidence-based prevention, treatment and support.

The Brief

In July 2020, Fisher Leadership was engaged by the client’s Board – seeking an outstanding CEO to lead a national organisation, operating under a complex federated model, committed to best practice research and application for prevention, treatment and support. Reporting to the Board and based in Sydney, the CEO is accountable to the Board for leadership, strategy and operational execution of the organisation to progress its vision, mission and values. The CEO has responsibility for relationships with federal government; represents the client in the public sphere to extend its respected profile in the community; and related positive media presence.

Solution Building

Following a detailed briefing it was expected that the successful individual could be a public health professional, clinician or an academic in an appropriate field. The search was conducted nationally, across Australia and targeted international locations, primarily New Zealand, the UK and Ireland. A digital advertising campaign was undertaken with the opportunity posted on multiple websites including the Medical Journal of Australia. To accompany the campaign, Fisher Leadership developed a dedicated candidate portal which provided full background information on the organisation, a message from the Chair, requirements of the position, and application submission functionality in a central microsite. The Fisher Leadership project team consulted with over 100 people from the public health community to seek recommendations. Comprehensive behavioural interviews were conducted before providing the client with a diverse longlist report of qualified candidates for panel interviews. All shortlisted candidates interviewed by the panel in the first round were deemed appointable and exceeded expectations of the selection committee.

The Outcome

Following extensive probity, reference checking and second round interviews with preferred candidates, the Board appointed the successful candidate who brings demonstrated CEO experience formerly leading an ANZ peak body, including advocacy during a Federal election.
