MGS Head of Grimwade & others - Fisher Leadership

Melbourne Grammar School Head of Grimwade House and Other Senior Leadership Positions

Over the last nine years Fisher Leadership has enjoyed a continuing relationship with Melbourne Grammar School, a preeminent Anglican day and boarding school predominantly for boys. Our ongoing engagement with the school has allowed us to develop a deep and thorough knowledge of the school and its imperatives. During our engagement with the school we have undertaken a number of senior leadership positions across both teaching and administration areas. Fisher Leadership conducted the search to appoint the Head of Grimwade House, which provides co-education for Prep to Year 6. A broad and comprehensive executive search was taken across Australia and New Zealand with targeted search completed across the United Kingdom. Candidates from all over Australia were reviewed and assessed, with a focus on seasoned leaders with extensive experience operating with a strategic and high-profile environment. A total of eight candidates were reviewed by Melbourne Grammar School, with four candidates participating in first round panel interviews. Mr Royce Helm was appointed to the position of Head of Grimwade House from the start of Term 2, 2016. Previously Royce was the Headmaster of Southwell School, located in Hamilton in New Zealand, for thirteen years. Prior to this role, Royce was the Headmaster of St George’s School in Wanganui in New Zealand. He also held the positions of Deputy Headmaster and Head of Middle School at St Kentigern School in Auckland.

A demonstration of Fisher Leadership’s ability to guide the selection of outstanding candidates in school leadership roles can be seen in the appointment of the Deputy Headmaster/Head of Senior School, Mr Nick Evans in 2014. After four years in this position it was announced that Nick had been appointed to the position of Principal at Wesley College and Fisher Leadership was once again engaged to complete the search to appoint a new Deputy Headmaster/Head of Senior School. Mr Ben Hanisch was the successful appointee, with a strong history of involvement in delivering education for boys, combined with 15 years of prior experience with Melbourne Grammar School. Ben’s most recent position is that of Deputy Headmaster/Head of Senior School with St Peter’s College in Adelaide. Ben commenced with Melbourne Grammar School in July 2019.

“I am the Director of Human Resources at Melbourne Grammar School (MGS) and have worked with Fisher Leadership for six years now. During that time, I have been on both sides of the table – Liz Jones approached me about the inaugural role at MGS and since that time, the School has engaged Fisher Leadership to assist us with four other Executive appointments and another three senior appointments.

Liz Jones has been our lead consultant on every assignment and the quality of communication throughout the process is one aspect that sets Fisher Leadership apart from many competitors with whom I have worked in the past. Liz and her team have a genuine talent for presenting quality shortlists that offer diversity, depth of experience and the odd ‘left field’ candidate – some of whom we have ultimately appointed. Liz takes the time to understand the brief very clearly and has developed a genuine understanding of the MGS culture.

During our onboarding process, I have always been careful to seek feedback from candidates who have moved through the Fisher Leadership process, and all have reported that the candidate care they experienced from Liz and her team was exceptional. I have also talked with unsuccessful candidates who have also felt highly valued through the process. Candidate care is an important element of any recruitment process for MGS and I feel very confident that Fisher Leadership delivers on this every time.”
