The Position
The Commission for Children and Young People is seeking to appoint an Aboriginal leader as the Commissioner for Aboriginal Children and Young People to build on the significant contribution made by the current incumbent, Andrew Jackomos PSM. The Commissioner for Aboriginal Children and Young People has heightened the scrutiny of services impacting on the safety and wellbeing of Aboriginal children in Victoria across all services systems.
Reporting to the Principal Commissioner for Children and Young People, the Commissioner for Aboriginal Children and Young People will engage widely with the community and provide independent advice to Ministers, government departments and relevant stakeholders on relevant policies and services focusing on child protection, safety and wellbeing. Whilst leading in an integral, complex and diverse environment, the Commissioner for Aboriginal Children and Young People will provide a strong voice for children to ensure child safety and wellbeing is paramount.
You will demonstrate executive leadership experience within a public policy context, coupled with knowledge and experience working with and for Aboriginal communities and Aboriginal governed organisations. Highly developed interpersonal skills will enable you to develop and maintain effective relationships and inspire change through service providers and health and government stakeholders. Understanding of policies and practices related to Aboriginal children and child protection and experience working with Aboriginal children and families in the child and family welfare/health, education or the child protection/youth justice system would be highly regarded.
