Professor Pauline Calleja is Dean, Healthcare Sciences at James Cook University

The multi-campus College of Healthcare Sciences is home to James Cook University’s nursing and allied health teaching and research programs.  As Dean, Professor Pauline Calleja is responsible for the strategic growth, sustainability and success of the College, through innovative strategic leadership, astute resource management, high quality learning, teaching and research delivery, and nurturing a culture which enhances staff, student and stakeholder experience and wellbeing.

An experienced nurse educator, Pauline was most recently Deputy Dean (Nursing) and Associate Dean and Head of College (Nursing and Midwifery) at Central Queensland University.  With research interests in improving rural and remote communities’ local access to high quality healthcare, she is an internationally recognised academic and researcher.  Her expertise includes mixed methods and qualitative design projects that encompass clinical intervention, practice improvement, and teaching and learning, predominantly within the sphere of health workforce development.  Pauline has also led and managed vocational education and training programs.

In addition to her academic background, Pauline brings direct experience in hospitals and healthcare, and is a former Director of Nursing and Facility Manager at Barcaldine Hospital, with both managerial and clinical support responsibilities, and Director of Nursing (Rural and Remote Relief) at Birdsville Primary Health Centre.
